MEREBROOK SCOOPS TOP GREEN ACCOLADE
David Bellamy applauds residential park
Birds, bats and butterflies have helped the owners of a Derbyshire property development to wing their way to a second victory in a major environmental award scheme.
Merebrook Park at Whatstandwell has scooped a top gold accolade in the David Bellamy Conservation Awards, designed to celebrate the UK’s chief providers of eco-friendly park home locations.
"Merebrook deserves a big round of applause for everything it's done to create a wildlife wonderland!" said world-famous botanist Professor David Bellamy.
"The park is packed with biodiversity, and shows that residential environments such as Merebrook can be perfect countryside partners," he added.
Merebrook Park is set in a UNESCO World Heritage site at the foot of the Peak District. The family-owned park underwent massive redevelopment in 2005 and provides opportunity for over 50 luxurious residential properties in a tranquil setting.
Amongst its many natural attractions are carefully planned landscaping and walks through the park's mature woodland at the side of the river Derwent which provide valuable habitats for many different animal, bird and plant species.
These areas are carefully maintained by the park, and have been successful in increasing its abundance of flora and fauna which includes badgers, deer, red foxes, owls, bats and a number of protected plants.
Other environment-friendly initiatives put in place on the park include riverside allotments, water features, the installation of bat boxes, plus the planting of indigenous trees and shrubs and the sowing of flowers with high pollen-bearing blooms which draw a wide range of common and less familiar butterfly species.
Park owner, Adrian Daley said that he and the park staff were absolutely delighted to have, once again, received the holiday park industry’s top green prize from Britain’s best-known conservationist:
"Since winning the award last year our exclusive community has continued to grow with twenty newly built bungalows now occupied and three properties for sale including an exclusive riverside home."
“We have created an idyllic, eco-friendly, secure living environment where residents feel safe and can enjoy the company of like-minded people.” Added Mr Daley.
The park has been in local ownership of the Daley family for over 35 years and the redevelopment project was carried out under the leadership of Adrian, wife Lynn, son Charles and his wife, Emily.
Merebrook has invested over £2 million in extensive landscaping, roads and security features including gated access and CCTV. The park is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Derbyshire Dales and is the ideal base for exploring the regions many leisure attractions. The Peak District National Park boasts some of the most dramatic landscapes in Britain and is particularly popular for outdoor pursuits such a walking and fishing. The region is also famous for its unspoilt picturesque villages and historic stately homes.
Besides having the opportunity to tend their own allotments owners can take advantage of exclusive fishing rights and river access along the beautiful river Derwent which borders the estate.
Merebrook offers a choice of designs, from open plan lodges to more traditional bungalows, all built to provide easy affordable living all year round. Owners can then plan the interior specifying layout, furniture, furnishings and fittings to suit their life-style.

THE GOOD LIFE
Residents get growing at Merebrook
Property owners at a prestigious Derbyshire park home development have responded to the government backed national campaign to get people to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
Residents at Merebrook, Whastandwell have been given their own allotments by the side of the river Derwent at the south end of the park.
The initiative comes on the back of the parks achievement of a Gold Award in the David Bellamy Conservation Scheme, designed to celebrate the UK’s most prestigious eco-friendly park home locations.
Park owner, Adrian Daley explained: “The idea came from a group of our residents who fancied returning to the theme of TV’s ‘The Good Life’ in true Richard Briars style.
“We had already created an idyllic, eco-friendly, secure living environment where residents feel safe and can enjoy the company of like-minded people. The allotment idea takes this a step further.
"Our exclusive community continues to grow with seventeen newly built bungalows now occupied. We also have four new properties including an exclusive riverside home." Added Mr Daley.
Merebrook has given property owners their own plots free of charge and has provided a water supply to the allotments. The green fingered enthusiasts have built their own raised beds, planted flowers, fruit trees and vegetables. And residents Tom and Ross Kitchen are keeping rare breed chickens on their plot.
TV botanist David Bellamy had described Merebrook as a "true green champion" after it featured among the front-runners in his nationwide environmental competition.

“We always knew that Merebrook was a very special location but were surprised how quickly the properties sold, especially to those with ‘empty nests’ looking to down-size from their bricks and mortar homes and move to a more environmentally friendly neighbourhood.
